    Work-life balance

Work-life balance is the equilibrium between professional and private life, allowing employees to effectively combine work with other aspects of life, such as family, hobbies, friends, and rest.

    What does it mean?

The benefits of achieving work-life balance are numerous and include:

    • Improved health and well-being: Maintaining a balance between professional and private life allows employees more time for rest and relaxation, which can lead to improved mental and physical health.
    • Increased job satisfaction: Individuals who achieve work-life balance are more satisfied with their jobs and less prone to stress, which can contribute to better work quality.
    • Better relationships with family and friends: Employees with work-life balance have more time to spend with family and friends, which can foster better interpersonal relationships and greater emotional support.
    • Increased productivity and efficiency: Employees with work-life balance are less susceptible to burnout and fatigue, which can contribute to increased productivity and efficiency at work.

    How to achieve work-life balance?

Achieving work-life balance, the equilibrium between work and private life, can be a challenge for many people, especially in today's world where we work longer hours and are constantly connected to work through mobile technologies. Here are some tips on how to achieve work-life balance:

    • Define your goals and priorities: Consider what is most important to you and what goals you want to achieve in your personal and professional life. Then set priorities and determine what steps you need to take to achieve a balance between work and private life.
    • Plan your time: Time planning is crucial for achieving work-life balance. Use a calendar and a to-do list to plan your days and weeks, including time for work, rest, relaxation, and time with family and friends.
    • Set boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and private life. For example, set working hours and make sure you don't respond to emails, calls, or undertake work outside of these hours. Encourage your colleagues and superiors to respect your free time as well.
    • Take care of your health: Look after your physical and mental health. Exercise regularly, eat healthy food, rest, and spend time on activities you enjoy.
    • Learn to delegate: You don't have to do everything yourself. Learn to delegate tasks and work with your team to avoid excessive workload and ensure more time for your private life.
    • Be flexible: Be flexible and adapt your plans to changing circumstances. Don't be afraid to ask for help and seek support from family, friends, and colleagues when you need it.

Achieving work-life balance requires time and effort, but it is crucial for health and happiness in life. Therefore, it is worth dedicating some time to planning your life to achieve a balance between work and private life.

What are the benefits of work-life balance?

Achieving work-life balance, the equilibrium between work and private life, can bring many benefits for both our health and well-being, as well as for our professional career. Here are some of the benefits that work-life balance provides:

    • Improves physical and mental health: Rest, regular physical activity, healthy eating, and time for relaxation are crucial for physical and mental health. Achieving work-life balance allows us to take care of our health and avoid illnesses caused by stress and overwork.
    • Improves quality of life: Work-life balance enables us to spend more time on activities we enjoy, such as spending time with family and friends, travelling, or pursuing hobbies. This improves our quality of life and we feel greater satisfaction.
    • Improves work performance and motivation: Rest and free time allow us to regenerate our strength and improve concentration, which translates into better work performance. Achieving work-life balance also allows us to maintain motivation for work and avoid professional burnout.
    • Helps with professional development: Work-life balance allows us to develop our interests and skills outside of work, which can positively influence our professional career. Achieving a balance between work and private life also allows us to acquire new skills, meet new people, and build relationships, which can be beneficial for our career.

    Work-Life Balance Directive

The Work-Life Balance Directive is a European Union legal act aimed at improving the balance between professional and private life for employees. This directive was adopted by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union in 2019 and must be implemented in member states by 2 August 2022.

In Poland, several changes have already been introduced to the Labour Code, aimed at increasing work-life balance. One such change was the introduction in 2019 of so-called “flexible working hours", which allows employees to adjust their working hours to their individual needs. Another change was the introduction of the right to childcare leave for fathers, who can now take paternity leave, allowing them to better care for their children in the first months after birth.

According to the new regulations, an employee has the right to accelerate the rest period in the event of illness of a child or other dependent person with whom they live. An employee also has the right to flexible working arrangements, such as remote work, part-time work, flexible working hours, or seasonal work. Furthermore, an employee who has at least one child under the age of 8 or cares for a dependent person has the right to flexible forms of employment, such as changes in working hours or changes in the place of work.

The Work-life balance directive and the resulting changes in the Labour Code aim to improve working and living conditions for employees, as well as to ensure gender equality in the labour market by making it easier to combine professional and private life, which in turn can positively affect the quality and effectiveness of work.
